All About Our Sushi Workshops
2 min read
Blowfish is known for its incredible, freshly made sushi. For this reason, we’ve decided to pass the knowledge on! Our sushi workshops are an awesome chance to learn how to make your own sushi from our very own sushi chef, JJ. Here is all you need to know.
The class usually runs for around 2 hours. JJ, who has been with us at Blowfish since 2014, will guide you through from start to finish. We recommend having the class around 5 or 6 pm – your dinner is sorted! Plus, this is the best time to take advantage of our beautiful views of the ocean, Cape Town, and Table Mountain, with the sunset creating the perfect backdrop.
In the class you will learn to make a platter of 21 pieces in the following sushi styles:
- Nigiri: thinly sliced raw fish, layered over a ball of rice. The name directly translates to ‘two fingers’, leaving in mind the small, bite-size delicious snack.
- Sashimi: a slice of fish, usually raw. As sashimi does not have the important rice element, it is up for debate whether it can be classified as sushi.
- Maki: a layered roll, with fish and vegetables in the middle, followed by sushi rice, and then a sheet of seaweed, or nori, on the outside.
- California Roll: an inverted Maki roll, with the fish and vegetables on the inside, then nori, and then the rice. The earliest mention of a California Roll in print dates to 1979.
- Salmon Roses: salmon and avocado wrapped around rice, with mayonnaise and caviar on top. Rumoured to have been invented right here in Cape Town!
The class requires a minimum of 10 people, which makes it perfect for special events! We’ve hosted these classes as team building exercises, birthday celebrations, engagement parties, and book club get-togethers. If you think your event fits the bill, we’ll make it work!
